Music Fees

Blair offers a nonprofessional liberal arts major in music that requires a minimum of 31 credit hours. Designed jointly by the college of Arts & Science, the major is also available to Engineering and Peabody students. Undergraduate students in these three schools may also elect one of three minors at Blair: General Music, Music History, or Music Performance.

Audition

Students intending to complete a second major or minor in music are expected to enroll in a semester of private lessons in voice, keyboard, guitar, or an orchestral instrument at the Blair School before auditioning for the program.

A student recommended by his or her teacher may audition for admission to the program during performance exams (juries) at the end of the first semester of private study.

A student with significant past experience on his or her instrument outside of the Blair School may request the department chair for an audition during performance juries at the end of the semester, in order to qualify for study as a Second Major, Performance Minor, Music History Minor or General Music Minor at Blair the following semester.

Second Major in Music (31 hours), distributed as follows:

Music Theory & Musicianship (12 hours): MUTH & MUSC 2100, MUTH & MUSC 2200, MUTH & MUSC 2300, MUSC 2400
Music Literature/History (9 hours): MUSL 2200W, 2100, 3100
Private Instruction (6 hours / 6 semesters): any single instrument (orchestral instrument, piano, organ, guitar, sax, euphonium, voice)
Ensemble (2 hours / 2 semesters): Specific courses required based on instrument; see catalog & summary forms below.
Elective (2 hours min.): chosen from list of options in theory, music literature/history, or conducting; see catalog & summary forms below:

SECOND MAJOR IN MUSIC: DECLARATION FORM & SUMMARY REQUIREMENTS (2017)

Music Performance Minor (25-26 hours), distributed as follows:

Music Theory & Musicianship (6-7 hours): MUTH 1200-1210; or MUTH 2100, MUSC 2100 and MUTH 2200, MUSC 2200
Music Literature/History (6 hours): MUSL 2200W or 1200; and one course chosen from MUSL 3220-3238
Private Instruction (11 hours / 6 semesters): any single instrument (orchestral instrument, piano, organ, guitar, sax, euphonium, voice)
Ensemble (2 hours / 2 semesters): Specific courses required based on instrument; see catalog & summary forms below.

MUSIC PERFORMANCE MINOR: DECLARATION FORM & SUMMARY REQUIREMENTS (2017)

General Music Minor (24-25 hours), distributed as follows:

Music Theory & Musicianship (6-7 hours): MUTH 1200-1210; or MUTH 2100, MUSC 2100 and MUTH 2200, MUSC 2200
Music Literature/History (12 hours): MUSL 2200W or 1200; Three MUSL courses chosen from specific lists outlined in catalog and summary forms below.
Private Instruction (4 hours / 4 semesters): any single instrument (orchestral instrument, piano, organ, guitar, sax, euphonium, voice)
Ensemble (2 hours / 2 semesters): Specific courses required based on instrument; see catalog & summary forms below.

GENERAL MUSIC MINOR DECLARATION FORM & SUMMARY REQUIREMENTS (2017)

Music History Minor (18-19 hours), distributed as follows:

Music Theory & Musicianship (6-7 hours): MUTH 1200-1210; or MUTH 2100, MUSC 2100 and MUTH 2200, MUSC 2200
Music Literature/History (12 hours): MUSL 2200W, 2100,  one course from 3220-3238, and 3100

Fees

A discount on private lesson music fees will be granted to students for future semesters of study, only after admission to the Second Major, Performance Minor, Music History Minor or General Music Minor program through performance jury and completion of the appropriate paperwork. This paperwork must be filed with the Offices of Academic Services at the Blair School and the the student's home school by the end of the first week of classes.
