Certificate of Merit

Certificate requirements

Performance

  • Achievement of Intermediate Level rank by May of the junior year of high school, following an audition adjudicated by the Certificate Program Council.
  • Studio or departmental performance class participation each semester. These classes afford the opportunity to develop analytical listening skills and to practice performing before other students and teachers. Scheduling of performance classes is at the discretion of the studio teacher. Attendance and participation are expected.
  • Studio recital performance once a semester. Students should perform a minimum of once a semester. These should be solo performances, although occasionally a chamber music ensemble is acceptable. The program must be signed by a faculty member in attendance at the performance and submitted to the student's private teacher to be filed in the student's certificate folder.
  • Instrumental or choral ensemble participation as qualified. This requirement is necessarily flexible. All orchestral players must audition for one of Blair's precollege large ensembles and participate if accepted. They are also expected to participate in their school's band or orchestra each year. All non-orchestral instrumentalists should participate in a choir or other ensemble performance group for at least one year. Vocalists must participate in a choir each year. (This is not restricted to Blair choirs. School, church and other choral programs are also acceptable.)
  • Pre-recital hearing for the Certificate Recital, heard by the Certificate Program Council. This hearing is performed for a panel chosen by the student's teacher and the coordinator of the Certificate Program from the following three groups: the departmental faculty, teachers with students in the Certificate Program, and the Certificate Program Council. Informal programs should be provided for the panel members. The hearing must take place at least three weeks before the scheduled recital date and merit a grade of B+ or better. Under exceptional circumstances, one re-hearing may be permitted, no later than 10 days before the performance.
  • Public performance of a Certificate Recital, at least 20 minutes in length. Appropriate level repertoire is required, and may include chamber music. While the recital hearing is graded, the recital itself is not required to be graded.
  • Note: While enrollment in chamber music is not required for the Certificate of Merit, students are encouraged to participate in this form of music-making as often as possible.

General

  • A grade point average of at least B+ in classwork and performance studies.
  • Attendance at two faculty recitals or large ensemble concerts (professional or collegiate) twice each semester. Students must submit each recital program, signed by a faculty member present at the performance, to the Certificate Program Coordinator.
