Dwayne Sagen, left, and Roland Schneller retired from the Blair School of Music June 30. Sagen, who served as assistant dean of admissions at Blair and also as director of bands since 1986, was honored with a composition written for him by Michael Kurek, associate professor of composition. Monument was given its world premiere at the College Band Directors National Association conference held at Blair in late March. Sagen, who retired after 29 years at Vanderbilt, conducted the piece. Roland Schneller, Blair’s first Chancellor’s Professor of Piano and now senior artist teacher of piano, emeritus, was the first full-time teacher hired when the Blair School of Music opened in 1964. As he completes 51 years at Blair, he plans to continue to teach part time. To honor Schneller’s more than 50 years of teaching, several current and former piano students performed in concert in his honor on September 13, 2014.
