Several Blair musicians, members of student-led organization the New Music Society, will perform a special collaborative concert Thursday, March 6, 2025, 4-5:00 p.m., at the E. Bronson Ingram Studio Arts Center (1204 25th Avenue South). The music performance will feature a program of semi-improvised pieces celebrating EBI Studio’s current artist in residence Yael Vishnizki-Levi.
Vishnizki-Levi has created an exhibition centered around five prints made from the transfers of markings made on her dining table by her young son, who found enjoyment in hitting the table with a spoon. The exhibition features the prints, a multimedia display, and an interactive tabletop on the floor, covered with spoons and egg shakers. Admission is free and this is a family friendly event. “I’m excited that the prints in the exhibition, created in a collaboration with graphic design professor Sarah Dunham, are going to be interpreted as experimental music scores by the New Music Society,” said Vishnizki-Levi. “These prints started as sound-making by my one-year-old son using his little spoon on our dining table, which developed into mark-making on the wooden surface of the table and later reproduced as risograph prints. Now these prints are about to become music again which is a beautiful ripple effect of this work.”

“We are absolutely thrilled to work with Yael on this project,” said New Music Society founder Grace O’Duffy. “Her work has an incredible sense of inherent musicality that we are excited to explore. The work was born from a musical act—a table struck with a spoon— and it is so beautiful to have it come full circle again, for the art pieces to be interpreted as musical scores. We are looking forward to exploring themes of play, motherhood, and experimentation, joy, and satisfaction in one’s environment. We are very excited to bring this event to the Vanderbilt community!”
The New Music Society, formed in 2024, is dedicated to creating and supporting a diverse community around contemporary music at Vanderbilt through improvisation, discussion, and peer- and guest-led musical experimentation. The organization aims to bring together students, faculty, and guests from across Vanderbilt and beyond to foster shared creative experiences and discover new ways of understanding what it means to make music.
