Blair to host finalists for inaugural Zildjian US Young Drummer of the Year Competition

The Avedis Zildjian Company, a world-leading maker of cymbals, drumsticks, and percussion mallets, is bringing its Young Drummer of the Year Competition to the US for the first time, with finalists set to compete in Ingram Hall at the Blair School of Music on October 12, 2025.

Founded by renowned UK drummer and educator Mike Dolbear, the Young Drummer of the Year competition has spent over two decades spotlighting extraordinary young talent in the UK. This year marks the first-ever expansion to the United States, offering a high-profile platform for American drummers aged 16 and under to showcase their creativity, musicality, and passion behind the kit.

“We launched this competition to inspire, discover, and support the next generation of drummers,” said John Stephans, CEO of the Avedis Zildjian Company. “Zildjian’s legacy has always been about empowering drummers at every level, and we’re thrilled to bring this opportunity to young musicians across the US.”

All contest submissions were reviewed by a panel of artist judges, with ten finalists selected to perform live in Nashville. Finalists will perform in Ingram Hall in front of a live audience and expert panel of judges. The winner will receive a full prize pack from Zildjian, Vic Firth, Gretsch, and Remo, along with national recognition and performance opportunities.

“What’s most exciting is seeing how creative and skilled these young drummers are,” said Mike Dolbear, founder of the competition. “We’re not just witnessing incredible technical ability—we’re seeing the future of music, and that’s exactly what this competition is about.”

Zildjian is honored to partner with Vic Firth, Gretsch Drums, and Remo—three powerhouse names in percussion—to support the event and provide unparalleled resources and mentorship to these promising young players.

“We are proud to host this milestone event at Blair,” said Melissa K. Rose, dean of the Blair School. “Our mission is to nurture excellence and innovation in young musicians, and the Zildjian Young Drummer of the Year aligns beautifully with that vision.”

The finals event on October 12 will be open to the public with tickets available through the Blair School of Music box office and at http://vu.edu/Zildjian
