Student of Edgar Meyer Sr. and Stuart Sankey. Soloist with orchestras throughout the United States. Recipient, Avery Fisher Career Grant, 1994; MacArthur Award, 2002. Exclusive Sony Artist and Grammy winner; solo recordings of music by Bach, Bottesini, and his own Double Concerto for Bass & Cello and Double Bass Concerto No. 1; recording/composing collaborations with Yo-Yo Ma, Joshua Bell, Hilary Hahn, Emerson String Quartet, Bela Fleck, Mike Marshall, Sam Bush, Mark O'Connor, and others. Guest composer and performer at Aspen, Caramoor, Chamber Music Northwest, Marlboro, and Tanglewood Music Festivals. Featured on albums by Vince Gill, Gary Morris, Hank Williams, Jr., Vassar Clements, Garth Brooks, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Bruce Cockburn, James Taylor, Lyle Lovett, Reba McIntire, the Indigo Girls, Travis Tritt, the Chieftains. Member, Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, 1985-93; Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, since 1994. Visiting Professor, Royal Academy of Music and the Curtis Institute. Blair School since 1984.
