Senior Artist Teacher of Piano
Valerie Middleton has performed as a piano soloist in recitals throughout the United States as well as in Austria and England. Most recently, she gave a lecture/recital on Mendelssohn for the Nashville Chapter of the Piano Teachers Guild. She has appeared as a concerto soloist in Minnesota and South Dakota playing works by Beethoven, Liszt and Mendelssohn. She also enjoys performing as a collaborative pianist with string players and singers. In addition, she has been the pianist for productions of Around the World, The Mikado and Iolanthe.
A native of South Dakota, Middleton received degrees in both piano performance and vocal music education with a Master of Music degree in performance and pedagogy from the University of Colorado, Boulder. Before joining the Vanderbilt faculty in 2007, she taught class piano at Yankton College and private piano at the University of Colorado continuing education program, the Jenkintown Music School, Jenkintown, PA and St. Paul Academy in St. Paul, Minn. She is a frequent adjudicator for area festivals and competitions.
