Vanderbilt Opera Theatre
Vanderbilt Opera Theatre (VOT) is open by audition to all Vanderbilt students. VOT, under the direction of Gayle Shay, presents one fully staged and costumed production with orchestra in the fall semester, and a staged art song theater piece in alternating spring semesters under the auspices of the Lyric Theatre Workshop (MUSO 1201-1203).
Repertoire for the fall production is drawn from both the operatic and musical theater canon. All members of the cast participate in backstage production work as assigned by the faculty.
Auditions are held at varying times throughout the year.
Fall 2012 operas
The Fall 2012 opera production will be two one-act operas by contemporary composers: Later The Same Evening, by John Musto, and Three Decembers, by BMI Composer-in-Residence Jake Heggie.
Later the Same Evening, written in 2007 by Musto and librettist Mark Campbell, takes inspiration from five paintings by artist Edward Hopper. Heggie wrote Three Decembers in 2008 with librettist Gene Scheer, based on an unpublished play by Terrence McNally.
Heggie will be in residence at Blair during production week as part of the BMI Composer-in-Residence program, working with student performers.
This production is sponsored by Susan and Drew Pinsky in gratitude for Helene Stanton's great musical influence on their family, by BMI, and by the Mary Cortner Ragland Master Series Fund.
